It's easy to believe that Three Fields just wants you to enjoy driving at speed in its preposterously big open world

Wreckreation

Arcade racers are about going forwards. The screen warps and blurs as the speedometer creeps up, sound drops away as though you're about to hit the sound barrier, and a thousand other little design techniques kick in to train your gaze firmly on the horizon. Never once — unless you just missed an egregiously placed checkpoint — does it occur to you to pull a U-turn and drive back over old ground.

But Wreckreation isn’t one for the rules. You can tell that by the way its name’s spelled. Here is a maverick in the arcade racing space. Not only have the heroic ten-person team at Three Fields Entertainment proved it’s possible for a small studio to build an open-world driving game in 2025, they’ve created one in which you're able to redesign the layouts of its races on the fly. The most renegade design decision of all, though, turns out to be the one to pull that figurative U-turn and go back in time to recapture the magic of classic Burnout titles. The name turns out to have not just two layers at work but three: this is a game about wrecking cars and creating playgrounds purely for the fun of it, but also one that’s trying to recreate a bygone era in the genre. Unfortunately, there’s trouble in this Burnout Paradise.
