With masterly skill and compositional finesse, these British architects have designed a power plant to function as a community heart for the newly developed neighbourhood at Elephant Park in London. Public services are combined with innovation in sustainable energy as well as in the project’s final form.
Starting with a family business strongly rooted in its territory, the Crosettas began provoking the market, bringing design to the unexplored field of radiators. Domus visited them at the Tubes factory in the Veneto region, where they recounted the phases and dynamics of a 25-year course and its new evolutions under the banner of innovation.
In the blinking of an eye, architect Anjalendran has gone from enfant terrible to Grand Old Man of Sri Lankan architecture. Having worked briefly with Geoffrey Bawa at the end of the 1970s, he started his own office on his mother’s veranda in Gregory’s Road in 1982. During the 1980s, in between running his own fledgling office, he managed to function as Bawa’s unpaid Man Friday, and was largely responsible for assembling the material for the famous White Book of 1986. In 1993, he built a new home-office in Battaramulla and has lived and worked there ever since.
Within the picturesque terrain of the Jaffna Wind Power Plant, Oculus is an oasis for staff. The unique design of the staff lodging offers dwellers a direct link with the surroundings. The construction process has taken great care to reduce the building footprint and avoid harming the natural surroundings.
