In this issue team Perfect Sourcing brings a brief about the textile and apparel
industry in Mumbai, its strengths, challenges and opportunities in the coming year. With increasing cost of labour and land in and around Maharashtra has posed a threat to garment manufacturers on the other there are several ways manufacturers can beat players from other regions in race of competition. The biggest strength that exists with them is availability of fabric and port which helps up in speedy delivery of goods. While most of the units are making men’s wear, there is an increase in production of ladies and kids fashion from Maharashtra over the last few years. Another observation about Western region is that it is moving away from exports and diverting towards manufacturing for the domestic market. In fact, most of the men’s wear collection is being sourced from Western India and the trend is expected to continue as it is surrounded by areas who specialize in offering high quality and innovative fabrics for trousers and men’s shirts. Many players shared their expansion plans in the coming days and also massive plans to enter the domestic apparel industry. It seems that Mumbai will no longer will be known as a export hub but will definitely get recognition as domestic apparel hub of India.
