Sometimes, we all need a little encouragement to slow down. It can be a quiet word from a loved one or an unexplained intervention that signals that it’s time to step back and live in the moment. For me, it came in the Maldives’ North Malé Atoll as I was hurriedly tapping at my laptop, attempting to submit some copy before climbing into bed. Suddenly, I had a blank screen. Out of battery. Copy lost. I put away my laptop and went outside where I was greeted by the most perfect full moon that was casting a hypnotising glow on the vivid blue waters that surrounded my villa. My frustration immediately dissipated.
I believe travelling holds a similar calming effect on our minds. We look on the world with curiosity, offering our attention to simple things like the waves rolling into shore or a bird flitting between branches; little events that we all too often ignore as we rush to live our daily schedules at home. Ultimately, this greater appreciation of our surrounds leads to a fresher mind and body.
