Amy Nickell-Turner is losing the battle with Gen Alpha slang

LEARNING THE LINGO

Even now, I remember stating with certainty that I would never not know what was No. 1 in the charts, and, similarly, I'd never be the type of person to not understand modern slang. I was not about to turn into my nan who never could appreciate that 'bad' was now good, and believed 'sick' people should be in bed, not headlining Glastonbury.

My era was all 'wicked', 'cool', maybe even an 'awesome' thrown in, all of which are very much still cemented in my vocabulary - just ask anyone who receives my WhatsApps.

OUT OF TOUCH?

Now, I'm a 35-year-old mum to Freddy, 10, who is classed as Gen Alpha - along with those in the demographic born from 2010 onwards - and despite his young age he already speaks in what is essentially code to my geriatric millennial brain. I haven't even come close to my naive vow of yesteryear.
