FIGHTING ALL THE WAY TO THE FINISH

LEWIS ASKEY

Rest day 2

Up to this point I've actually been feeling pretty OK with my fatigue levels. Of course, I've been feeling the efforts of the racing but the general fatigue has been a lot better than in previous Grand Tours. That changed today. I felt like the 24 hours off the bike was not enough for my body to recover properly.

Today was not the stage I thought I was going to crash in the Tour, but I did, in the neutral. Plappy [Luke Plapp] was waving towards some Aussies in budgie smugglers, overlapped the wheel in front and shot off to the side, taking both himself and me out. Today was quite different to the majority of racing we do through the year where, yes, it's a big fight for the break, but once formed and the road is blocked, riders don't often start attacking again. At the Tour, this has happened almost every day. Today it was worth it as the break ended up winning the stage. I got to enjoy the final ascent, appreciate the crowds, take in the atmosphere and throw a few wheelies in along the way.
