Scotland hosts final National Trophy Series
-
With the National Trophy Series elite standings done and dusted already, it was left to the under-23s to provide the drama at the final round in Scotland - and they didn't disappoint.
Freya Whiteside (Simpson Nouvelles) and Declan Oldham (Hope Factory Racing) were both second heading into round six at Irvine Beach Park, but did enough to leapfrog the leaders and take the titles.
Whiteside took second overall in the women's race behind Anna Flynn (Spectra Racing) but was top under-23, giving her enough points to overtake Alice Colling and win the overall series.
In the men's race senior rider Jenson Young (Ribble Verge Sport) took the win while Spencer Corder (ROTOR Race Team) took second and was top under-23.
A minute behind in third was Declan Oldham, who secured enough points to snatch the overall series win away from Joel Hurt (Moonglu SpatzWear) who could only manage ninth overall and fifth under-23 at Irvine.
The drama continued in the veteran categories, with Kate Eedy (Team Empella) taking the women's over-40s series win by the narrowest of margins.
Series leader Ceris Styler (ROTOR Race Team) broke her leg on the opening lap, leaving Eedy to power on and take a win which brought her level on points with Styler. However, by virtue of winning the most recent round Eedy takes the overall series. The men's over-40 race saw Giles Drake (Wheelbase CabTech Castelli) complete a clean sweep of all six rounds, leaving him 1.33 ahead of Paul Oldham (Hope Tech Factory Racing).
Elsewhere, Toby Barnes (Spectra Racing) won round 12 of the West Midlands League, with Sullivan Berry almost two minutes behind. Alderney Baker (Team Empella) was fastest female. Friday-Saturday, 2-3 January
• National Trophy Series round six
