World at risk of losing ice sheet, glaciars

THE ANTARCTIC ice sheet, which has the biggest potential for sea-level rise upon melting, may be at or very close to a tipping point, says a study published in Communications Earth and Environment on May 30.

The study says it has confirmed "hysteresis" behaviour in the ice sheet, which means the melting process has entered a point at which it will continue even if global warming is contained. It says that even 0.25°C rise in ocean temperatures― or even zero warming over the current levels-in the West Antarctic ice sheet will lead to a sea-level rise of 4 m
