LEONARDO M-346 THE FUTURE ALREADY HERE
Geopolitics
|October 2025
The M-346 is more than just a multi-role jet, a complete system to train the fighter pilots of tomorrow.
-
Built by Leonardo, one of the world's leading Aerospace, Defence and Security (AD&S) players, the M-346, with its twin engines and aerodynamic profile, is far more than just another advanced jet. It is a symbol of how technology, innovation, and vision converge to shape the future of training. Agile, reliable, and cost-efficient, the aircraft has redefined what a training platform can be: not merely a stepping stone toward combat jets, but a fully integrated system that prepares pilots for the complexity of tomorrow's skies. Add to this digitalisation, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, cyber resilience, and touch-enabled multi-function displays for an enhanced Human-Machine Interface (HMI), and the result is a vision of the future that has already taken flight. What makes the M-346 truly remarkable is its ability to bridge two worlds. On one side, it is a powerful transonic aircraft with superb handling and performance, capable of replicating the feel of frontline fighters. On the other hand, it is a complete training ecosystem a machine that does not simply fly but teaches.
Its Embedded Tactical Training System allows pilots to rehearse the use of sensors, weapons, and data links in flight, while a sophisticated Ground-Based Training System brings those scenarios to life on the ground. Together, they create what specialists call a Live (actual flight), Virtual (simulators), and Constructive (computer-generated forces across air, naval, and land domains) environment: a unique blend where real sorties, high-fidelity simulators, and computer-generated forces combine into a seamless training pathway with unmatched realism.

JOINTNESS TO REDEFINE MARITIME AIR POWER
The buzzword in New Delhi is multidomain warfare, which involves a high level of jointness between the three services. But sensible and easy steps can be taken, especially in the maritime sphere, to integrate the Coast Guard, Air Force, and Navy into a potent force to safeguard the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, argues AMIT GUPTA
