MP and council clash over road plan

UPGRADING a key Bridgwater roundabout would have had "limited benefit" to motorists and led to 18 months of further disruption, a senior councillor has said.

The Cross Rifles roundabout is one of the busiest road junctions in Bridgwater, and was originally earmarked for a major upgrade when the then-Conservative government allocated more than £10m in 2021.
In 2024, Somerset Council took the decision to scrap the Cross Rifles upgrade in light of rising costs, redirecting all remaining funding to upgrading the Dunball roundabout near the motorway.
This decision has been widely criticised by local Conservative councillors and Bridgwater MP Sir Ashley Fox, who lambasted the council in parliament in November 2025 for "leaving Bridgwater gridlocked".
