THE big news this week concerns the ladies. In the Somerset County Championship, over 36-holes at Long Sutton, Libby Dezis and Aimee Sawyer tied on four-over-par before the former became County Champion after countback.

Mendip sweep the board in County Championship

Ellen Reakes finished third, while last year's junior captain Connie Cox was fifth and young Maisie Dezis a very creditable 15th. Unsurprisingly, Libby, Sawyer and Reakes won the Holt Shield for the best team result.

Back at Mendip, 142 men played in the Burnell Cup which saw a win for Lee Callow with 42 points. Richard Barker claimed Division One with 38, one ahead of Tom Chapman who beat Charlie Pike and Richard Jeffery on countback.

Division Two went to Brian Rawlings with 42, again one better than Jack Harrington with Kevin Brimble a further point back in third. Longstanding member Clive Down took Division Three with 41, two in front of Sam Thatcher with Simon Kidd third on 38.

The ladies' County Qualifier saw 53 compete. The overall winner was Pauline Williams with a magnificent 43 points.

Division One went to Fran Davies with 38 after countback from Hayley Bullock, with Pauline Young a point back in third. Division Two was won by Ann Padley with 41, again after countback from Louise Scott, while Anita Butcher was third on 38.

Isobel Panton took Division Three with 40, some four clear of Julie Doyle who beat Carol Curtis on countback.

From Sudan to Wells – mayor shares his remarkable story

IS truth sometimes stranger than fiction? Quite possibly. Could you write it? A ten-year-old boy from the Sudan, speaking no English, arrives in London in 1981. Forty-four years later he becomes the 651st Right Worshipful Mayor of a beautiful, quintessential tiny English city in the rural south-west of England. True or false? Totally true. We are talking about Councillor Louis Agabani and, of course, we are talking about Wells, and we are at the November meeting of Wells Civic Society, where Louis told his story.
