Ouaddou backs rotation as Pirates look to impress

ORLANDO Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has highlighted the importance of squad rotation as the Buccaneers prepare for a challenging new season that will see them compete on several fronts, including a return to the CAF Champions League.

Pirates secured their place in Africa’s premier club competition with a second-place finish in last season's Betway Premiership, joining reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Their previous continental run ended with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Pyramids FC, and while winning the league remains a major priority, Ouaddou has stressed the need for balance following the arrival of several new players during the off-season.

In their 2-0 opening weekend MTN8 quarterfinal win over Polokwane City, a number of regulars were missing from both the starting lineup and the bench, as several new signings were handed opportunities to impress.

Notably absent were Evidence Makgopa and his strike partner Tshegofatso Mabasa, both of whom played crucial roles in José Riveiro’s title-chasing side last season.
