Stark reality facing clubs

AS the Premiership season for 2025/26 commences, and another transfer window closes, orthodoxy suggests that the Premier League Profit and Sustainability regulations (PSR) is biased against some clubs, such as Newcastle United, which is owned by the Saudis, and in favour of the “Top Six”.

Notwithstanding that PSR (and UEFA rules) are designed to prevent professional clubs spending more than they earn in the pursuit of success, and mitigating against unsustainable growth/development of individual clubs, the stark reality is that Premiership clubs may be unable to maintain their current investment in new talent, whilst opening themselves to the risk that critical funding streams may be removed should the Government decree that negotiated media rights reflect monopolistic behaviour.
