Wedding hosts cough up for after-dinner cigarette bowls
The Guardian
|July 26, 2025
Coffee and chocolates traditionally signal the end of a meal at a wedding.
More recently, however, couples are ditching the sweet stuff for cigarettes. Bowls and trays piled with smoking paraphernalia are becoming the new party favor.
Last weekend, guests at Charli XCX's nuptials were served Vogue Essence bleue slim cigarettes from silver trays. Social media is peppered with wedding receptions featuring tiered dessert stands laden with cigarettes or dedicated "smoking stations" comprising bowls of cigarettes and silver urns as ashtrays. It is an expensive addition to the wedding bill considering the average cost for a packet of 20 cigarettes is £14.
Many modern brides take their inspiration from Mary-Kate Olsen, the former child star turned The Row fashion designer who, in 2015, doled out mini bowls of cigarettes during her wedding to her now ex-husband Olivier Sarkozy.
