Met to double use of facial recognition technology

The Guardian

July 31, 2025

The Metropolitan police is to more than double its number of operations that use live facial recognition.

- Nadeem Badshah

The technology, which involves matching faces caught on surveillance footage against a watchlist, will now be used up to 10 times a week across five days, up from four times a week over two days.

The tactic will be deployed at the Notting Hill carnival in west London over the August bank holiday.

An older form of the technology was tested at the event in 2016 and 2017. Earlier this month, the Met revealed it had made 1,000 arrests using live facial recognition, of which 773 had led to a charge or caution.
