Lakshmi Niwas Mittal: Rajasthan's steel magnate who built a global empire
The Daily Guardian
|May 10, 2025
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, a name synonymous with steel, innovation, and entrepreneurship, is one of the wealthiest and most influential industrialists in the world.

He has built a steel empire that spans continents, establishing himself as a visionary businessman who transformed a small, family-owned business into one of the largest steel conglomerates in the world.
Through his leadership, he has not only shaped the steel industry but has also played a key role in global business dynamics. His success story is a remarkable example of how ambition, foresight, and resilience can lead to the creation of an industrial empire.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Lakshmi Niwas Mittal was born on September 15, 1950, in a small village called Sadulpur, in the Rajasthan state of India, to a family with a strong business background. His father, Mohan Lal Mittal, ran a steel business in the town of Kolkata. From an early age, Lakshmi showed an interest in business and an acute understanding of the industrial world. His journey into the steel industry was, in many ways, a natural progression, given his family background.
Mittal completed his schooling in Kolkata and then went on to study at St. Xavier's College, one of India's premier educational institutions. He earned a bachelor's degree in commerce, but it was his passion for business and steel that propelled him to the forefront of the industry. After completing his studies, he moved to the United States for further education, where he honed his entrepreneurial skills and business acumen, gaining insights into the workings of the global industrial economy.
ENTERING THE STEEL INDUSTRY Lakshmi Mittal's foray into the steel industry began when he joined his father's business in the early 1970s. However, he soon realized that the Indian steel industry faced significant limitations in terms of technology, efficiency, and market reach. Undeterred by the challenges, Mittal set his sights on the global steel market, believing that he could revolutionize the industry through cutting-edge technology and an innovative approach to business.
