NEW PARISHES MAY ALSO BE FORMED AMID CONCERNS OVER SHAKE-UP

GUILDFORD Borough Council is considering proposals to create a Guildford Town Council as well as new parishes in the town, amid concerns surrounding local government as Surrey's Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) looms.

The borough council is considering conducting a Community Governance Review (CGR) to evaluate whether the currently unparished urban areas of Guildford should form a new parish.

This review would consider the merging, altering or abolishing of current parishes, their electoral arrangements and their names.

According to the council's terms of arrangement for the consideration of conducting a CGR, this review is on the cards because once Surrey's Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) is completed, Guildford Borough Council will no longer exist in its current form, which would mean that the areas which currently do not have a parish would have "no first tier of local government that is democratically accountable for delivering certain services and strategic priorities for local people".
