Keagan Buchanan's career is what many players could dream about. The former midfielder played for teams like Bloemfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United, and AmaZulu FC, but his game time was often limited by injuries. In the second part of this interview with Soccer Laduma's Delmain Faver, Buchanan talks about his complicated relationships with coaches like Ernst Middendorp and Benni Mccarthy. Buchanan also opens up about the time he spent at Kaizer Chiefs and his achievements during his career.

KB: I think coach Benni McCarthy's system and later coach Brakkies (Brandon Truter) worked well, but I don't want to talk about that other French guy (Romain Folz).

With coach Benni and coach Vasili Manousakis, that technical team, I really played the way I always wanted to play, like a 6 or an 8. Obviously, I stepped up and enjoyed myself. But also at Maritzburg, I had the time of my life under coach Eric Tinkler. I enjoyed myself to another level, with Miguel Timm in the middle. With Miguel Daylon Claasen in the middle there, but predominantly in that midfield. Even later on, with Travis Graham and Phumlani Ntshangase, I really enjoyed myself at Maritzburg. The people at Maritzburg were good to me, even though I didn't like all these nonsense stories when I left. They must stop lying and saying I was not focused. They didn't offer me a new contract, so I had to wait. In the last six months, they told me to wait. My future was uncertain. So, they let me go even though I didn't sign a pre-contract when they released me. They thought I signed a pre-contract, but I didn't. I was literally waiting for them, and they took their own time. The German Madala (Ernst Middendorp) doesn't like me. Obviously, when he joined, I was done and there seemed to be issues.

DF: What was coach Middendorp's problem with you?

Every meeting was a war

SAFA National Vice President Bennett Bailey was elected unopposed for a third term as SAFA Cape Town President at the Regional Conference held recently at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Bailey, who has been at the helm of Cape Town football since 2018, will lead the region for the next four years, supported by his Vice Presidents, Andrew Bothman, Nomonde Ndyoko and Linda Pistoli, among other executive members. The buildup to this year’s Regional Conference was far from smooth, as there were disputes and even an urgent court application along the way. In this interview with Soccer Laduma’s Mzoxolo Budaza, Bailey reflects on how far SAFA Cape Town has come under his leadership and discusses the organisation’s plans going forward.

Can Bafana fans afford World Cup tickets?

South Africa is going to the FIFA World Cup 2026, and for 16 lucky fans, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture is footing the bill. Minister Gayton McKenzie’s ‘Mzansi to the World Cup’ competition captured the imagination of thousands, producing 20 proud ambassadors who will stand inside Estadio Azteca when Bafana Bafana kick off against Mexico on 11 June. It is a beautiful story. But behind the feel-good headlines lies a harsher truth: for the overwhelming majority of South African football fans, the 2026 World Cup is financially out of reach. Ticket prices that would swallow eight months of minimum-wage income, flights across 14 000 kilometres, visas, hotels and daily living costs all combine to tell the story of a nation that qualified for the greatest show on earth but can barely afford a seat in the stadium.
