South Africa's VAR conundrum
Soccer Laduma
|November 27, 2025
The Betway Premiership ranks among the best leagues on the African continent.
-
With a record-breaking R20 million prize awaiting the eventual champion, it surpasses the prizes awarded to winners of the Moroccan Botola Pro 1 League, Egyptian league, and Tunisian leagues. However, amid the excitement about the South African league being viewed as commercially and financially the most successful on the continent, a cloud of concern hangs over the integrity of the competition – primarily due to the recurring errors made by referees during crucial moments. While significant moves are afoot to implement modern technology in the form of the Video Assistant Referee system, South Africa is still far behind its Tunisian, Moroccan, and Egyptian counterparts.
Historically, refereeing decisions in South African football have often been scrutinised, with controversial calls influencing match outcomes and fueling debates about fairness and consistency. These mistakes undermine the credibility of the sport, threaten the competitiveness of the domestic league, and risk disillusionment among fans.
