Plans that may see city borders expand described as ‘rushed through’

SWEEPING plans to shake up councils across Nottinghamshire in a move that could see an expanded city have been described as “rushed through” as a decision will be needed in months.

- By OLIVER PRIDMORE

The government is abolishing councils throughout the county as part of a reorganisation of local government.

Nottinghamshire's leaders have been meeting to discuss how the county and city should be governed in future and the government set a deadline of November 2025 for final plans to be presented. Yet local leaders say individual councils will actually have to decide their own preference in June or July.

Milan Radulovic, the leader of Broxtowe Borough Council on behalf of the independent Broxtowe Alliance group, said: “It's another example of something that's not being properly thought through. To consider things like social services, education, health and transport is a massive task.

“It's not something where you can just bung a load of different authorities together, that's not going to work. I think it's disingenuous that local government reorganisation is almost being rushed through as an afterthought.”
