Jab offered to reduce children’s cancer risk

January 28, 2026

ALL pupils in Year 8 and above are being offered a free vaccination to help protect them against developing certain types of high-risk cancers.

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust said the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a safe and effective immunisation.

HPV is a group of viruses that live on the skin and can cause several types of cancer in both males and females, including cervical, vulval, vaginal, penile, anal and some mouth and throat cancers.

The vaccine also helps to protect against developing genital warts.

The school aged immunisation service will be visiting secondary schools across the city and counties until March 6.
