HILLSBOROUGH CAMPAIGNER MARGARET ASPINALL DELIVERS POWERFUL MESSAGE AS SHE INTRODUCES PRIME MINISTER

- By LIAM THORP, LOTTIE GIBBONS AND DAN HAYGARTH

MARGARET Aspinall delivered a powerful message on the main stage of the Labour Party Conference yesterday as she introduced Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his keynote leader's speech in Liverpool.

Ms Aspinall, whose 18-year-old son James was unlawfully killed at Hillsborough in 1989, has been one of the most prominent and important figures in the campaign for truth, justice and for a lasting legacy for the 97 Liverpool fans who died in the disaster.

She was in Parliament earlier this month to watch as a new Hillsborough Law was finally laid in the House of Commons. The landmark new law will bring in a legally-binding duty of candour, meaning public officials must act with honesty and not lie or face criminal sanctions.

The bill will also provide the biggest rebalancing of legal aid in the country in a decade and will mean families appearing at inquests and inquiries will be entitled to the same funded legal representation as public bodies and organisations.

Ms Aspinall joined fellow Hillsborough family members Charlotte Hennessy, Steve Kelly and Sue Roberts in Downing Street earlier this month, where they met with the Prime Minister before the bill was laid in Parliament.
