The Spanish coach was brought to Anfield by Rafa Benitez following his appointment as manager in the summer of 2004. He was a key part of the coaching team that clinched the Champions League and the FA Cup in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Ochotorena, a former Spain international, served for three years under Benitez on Merseyside before leaving in 2007. His passing was announced by his former club Valencia on Monday, with Real Madrid, another of his former clubs, also paying tribute with a statement.

Valencia said: “Valencia CF regrets with deep sadness and regret the death of Jose Manuel Ochotorena, goalkeeper coach, former player and legend of the Club, at the age of 64.
