As I was writing this column for the Standard, I heard the sad news that Pope Francis has died.

Pope Francis was an advocate for most marginalised people

Like many, I watched him appear in front of the crowds in St Peter's Square on Easter Sunday but his health has finally given way.

Francis became the 265th successor to St Peter and was made Pope in 2013.

He preferred to lead a very simple life and was a very strong advocate for the poorest and most marginalised people in society, preaching tolerance and reconciliation whenever he could.

May he now rest in peace.
