THE great escape has begun.

This weekend marks the start of the busiest travel period of the year, with millions driving, flying and hailing their way home for Christmas.

The great winter migration. The holiday mass exodus. The seasonal homecoming.

But thousands of us in the US aren't coming home this Christmas.

We're here legally. We have valid visas or green cards. But they're not the golden ticket to America that they once were.

In Trump's America, the crackdown on illegal immigrants - and collateral damage on those here legally - has resulted in widespread fear.

Nobody is leaving for fear they won't be able to reenter.
