1,040 asylum seekers given order to leave

THE number of asylum seekers returned to another country last year was up almost four times on 2023, figures show.

New stats published by the Euro-pean Commission reveal show that 1,040 asylum seekers were returned from the Republic to somewhere outside the EU last year.

That is compared to 285 in 2023.

The figures also highlight how enforcement activity has increased dramatically in the past two years.

The numbers returned after being issued with orders to leave were 150 in 2021 and 190 in 2022.
