Turn of a card could decide next leader

The appointment of the new leader of South Lanarkshire Council could be decided by a pack of playing cards.

Next leader: Councillors David Fagan and Eddie McAvoy are set to battle it out for the top job

The ball is rolling to find a replacement for Joe Fagan, who is stepping down from the top role after being elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament.

And a decision will be voted on by elected members at a full council meeting today (May 27), but it is still unclear which candidates will be put forward.

However, if there is no clear preferred candidate and any vote results in a tie, then an Ace high card could be the decider.
