These were just two of the strategies ultrarunner Tom Evans used to win the prestigious Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) known as the SuperBowl of running.

Starting and finishing in Chamonix, France, the 109-mile course snakes around the Alps with 32,000ft of brutal climbing across three countries.

"It pretty much rained solidly for eight hours through the night, and it was also cold and above 2,300m it was snowing so that made it difficult," he said.

"But I think coming from the UK it's something you are fairly used to. When you bring that into the mountains, nothing really changes, so every time I saw my crew at aid stations I would change some of my kit.
