15 rescued as multiple boats capsize in race

A DAY of 'intense racing' by sailing dinghies off the Gwynedd coast turned into a nightmare for those involved. A rescue operation involving boats and a helicopter was launched when high winds left boats capsized and scattered across Cardigan Bay.

The Royal Yacht Association is staging its Youth Nationals at Plas Heli, Pwllheli, this week. Some 230 of the UK's top young sailing talents have converged on the marina to take part in an event seen as a launchpad for some of the world's top racing sailors. On Tuesday, April 15, HRH The Princess Royal paid a visit to meet organisers and competitors.

But Wednesday's racing was hit by 'challenging weather conditions.'

As wind speeds picked up, numerous dinghies capsized, leaving young sailors in the water.

At one point, the event's own rescue boats became overwhelmed by the number of youngsters needing help.
