Mahmood's major asylum system reform, Rights laws revamp to hike deportations

THE Home Secretary will today unveil plans to overhaul rights laws to speed up deportations, in the biggest asylum system shakeup since the Second World War.

The hardline blueprint will include measures to ramp up removals of foreign criminals and illegal migrants, including reforms to human rights law. Proposals also cover restrictions to the right of appeal and a tightening of modern slavery legislation.

It comes after Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said Britain's asylum system was "out of control".

The plans triggered alarm from charities and the government was accused of "reheating a failed strategy" proposed by the Conservatives.

But Ms Mahmood yesterday rejected the criticism, saying: "I am the child of migrants myself. This is a moral mission for me, because I can see illegal migration is tearing our country apart.
