Amesbury under pressure to quit his seat
SIR Keir Starmer faces a possible by-election after MP Mike Amesbury was jailed for 10 weeks for drunkenly attacking a man in the street.
Amesbury, 55, who was suspended by the Labour Party and now represents the Cheshire seat of Runcorn and Helsby as an independent, is under pressure to step down, triggering a by-election which Nigel Farage' Reform UK hopes to win.
If he refuses to stand down then a by-election can take place if 10% of local voters sign a petition calling for one. The Labour Party indicated yesterday it wants Amesbury to quit.
