Liveable Neighbourhood Bus gate cameras are set to be switched on

THE date three bus gate cameras will be switched on has been confirmed by Bristol City Council.

The bus gates are the final measure of the East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood trial, which aims to make streets safer for all, boost health and wellbeing, improve access, and reduce air pollution.

The trial has proved controversial with locals, with a small group attempting to stop contractors from installing planters, bus gate signs and painting the roads. Protesters managed to prevent the completion of one of the bus gates at the junction of Marsh Lane and Avonvale Road by lying down in the road. Previous efforts to install traffic blockers were also met with protests.

Leader of Bristol City Council Tony Dyer recently admitted that “there are definitely lessons to be learned” about how the rollout of the liveable neighbourhood was handled.

He said: “Do I personally regret? Yes, I do. You never like to be in the situation where you are coming into conflict with people.

“You often have valid concerns. However, I don’t think that we are ever going to please everybody with everything we do.”

Bristol City Council has now confirmed the bus gate cameras will be switched on from Monday, June 2.
