The Sharks’ director of rugby knows from his days with Saracens, as a player and coach, that success comes from planning and patience rather than just happening.

Sale were leading in the final with 14 minutes to go when Saracens capitalised on a mistake and used their knowhow of the big occasion to ease their way to a 10-point victory. The defeat did not take away from what had been an impressive campaign which started with five successive victories. The Sharks lost only once at home, to Harlequins, and picked up five victories away from the AJ Bell.
