ALEX Sanderson has pushed his players to their physical and mental limits this season after they fell short in May’s Premiership final against Saracens. The Sharks’ director of rugby knows from his days with Saracens, as a player and coach, that success comes from planning and patience rather than just happening.

Sarries went through pain before they caught the winning habit and Sanderson wants his players to use the disappointment of losing the final to make sure that when they get there again, they seize the moment.

The defeat did not take away from what had been an impressive campaign which started with five successive victories. The Sharks lost only once at home, to Harlequins, and picked up five victories away from the AJ Bell.
