VE DAY 80 LIVE HOL MONDAY & THURSDAY, TIMES VARY, BBC1 FACTUAL

After almost six dark years of conflict, 8 May 1945 saw the nation welcome the end of World War Two in Europe with VE Day. Now, a range of programmes will commemorate this week's 80th anniversary, with broadcaster Sophie Raworth at the helm of the BBC's coverage, which includes a military procession and a Service of Thanksgiving, while Zoe Ball will host a glittering concert with star performances. Here, Sophie, 56, reveals why she's honoured to be part of the historic events...

What does it mean to you to help mark the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day?

VE Day is the moment to reflect on the whole war effort, not just those who fought abroad but also those who served on the home front.

imageA whole generation of mostly women and older people were mobilised to keep the country running during the war years. Many people still remember the celebrations on the streets, hearing the news that Germany had surrendered and the relief felt by millions that the air raids were over.

Across the collection of programmes, you will be talking to many of those who lived through the war.

Does that feel very special?
