Paternal Postpartum Depression in new dads is real and here's how to address it, writes Kayal Arivalan

Daddy, Daddy, BLUE

Welcoming a new life into the world, into the family, is a thrilling experience. Becoming a new mom or dad is the start of an exciting journey but, along with joy, it does bring emotional turbulence. Mothers might experience postpartum depression and a hormonal imbalance, with impacts on mental health and overall wellbeing. The emotional shift new fathers undergo, however, often goes unnoticed. It's important to recognise that fathers, too, can experience their own version of this struggle – termed Paternal Postpartum Depression (PPD). Research by the US National Institute of Health reveals that one in 10 new fathers faces symptoms of PPD. This affects not just the father’s mental health but also the overall wellbeing of the child and family.

Eshanka Wahi, a Dubai- and Delhi-based wellness coach, details this often-overlooked topic. “Having a baby in the family is a joyous occasion, but the postpartum period can be challenging for both mothers and fathers,” she points out. “While postpartum depression is often associated with mothers, it’s crucial to recognise that fathers can also experience this emotional struggle. Supporting a partner through postpartum depression requires understanding, empathy, and open communication,” she adds.

RECOGNISE THE SIGNS

Postpartum depression in fathers, sometimes also called “new dad blues,” is far more common than acknowledged. “Common signs include persistent sadness, irritability, changes in sleep patterns, and withdrawal from family and friends," Eshanka explains. Factors such as sleep deprivation, lifestyle adjustments, and financial pressures often contribute to these struggles. “Husbands might feel overwhelmed, anxious, or experience a sense of isolation. Recognising these signs is the first step toward offering support.”
