Mark Cavendish started the Tour of California earlier this month, reporting that he was finally clear of the Epstein-Barr virus and that he was ready to “go and challenge for some race wins”.

His patchy early season meant it would always be difficult to make good on those intentions in what was considered a particularly tough edition of the ToC — it featured multiple classified climbs on six of the seven stages, with cat-ones or higher on four of those — and a mid-pack finish was as good as it got.
