Double Take

Striking a balance between life and work, this designer’s Scandinavian home doubles up as his company’s headquarters

The Brief

The coronavirus pandemic has not only changed the way we interact with each other outside of the home, it has significantly affected how we live in our own abodes as well. With remote working arrangements becoming increasingly common, our new home offices are blurring the boundaries between our private and professional lives. William Ng and Kho Keguang, lead designers at Studio Wills + Architects, took this idea of the “professional home” even further, creating a space that is as much a cosy sanctuary for William as it is the professional headquarters for his design studio.

By choosing an old HDB unit along the corridor deemed unpopular for its age and lack of privacy, the designers were able to embrace this evolving relationship between private and public spaces, breathing innovation and new life into the flat. The unit was fitted with a foyer, which expands into two separate entrances, giving a sense of separation and independence to the homeowner and visitors alike while still retaining some visual continuity.
