Overweight refers to excess body weight (excess in terms of standard weight prescribed as per height and weight ratio) comprising of muscles bones and water. Obesity means an excess of body fat. Now obesity is regarded as the most common problem and its consequences are far reaching. An obese person may suffer from many diseases. It is recognized as the second leading cause of premature death, second only to smoking. Around one third of the adult population is estimated to be obese.
Causes of obesity
The causes of obesity are a multiple factors such as genetic cultural behavioural and socio-economic. Practically speaking, obesity occurs when there is an imbalance between calorie intake and calorie utilized in daily activities. A person does not become obese overnight, but over a reasonably long period of time if the imbalance between calories consumed and calories spent persist. Then there is every chance of turning obese. The human body can support some extra fat and it is required also for the purpose of storing energy and body insulating. But beyond a certain point of time, the body fat creates problem for your health and sometimes is life threatening also.
Factors for Obesity
- Age: after 40 years your metabolic rate slowly decreases. If you eat the same quantity of food as you were young & even if you do a lot of physical activity, your weight increases. The fact is that you don’t require so many calories and the extra calories are deposited as fat. The immediate solution is to decrease your calorie intake and make it a permanent one for a better life.
- Level of activity: The requirement of calories for a particular person depends on the activity level. A very active person requires more calories than a less active person. Without regular physical activity, fat gets deposited in the body.
