Staying Mobile

Mobility aids can help you stay active, if youre having walking difficulties but dont require too much support.

Staying Mobile

The number of older adults across the country is growing – and with it, a reliance on walking aids such as canes, walkers, and wheelchairs.

Using a mobility device can help you make up for strength deficiencies and balance issues, but Mount Sinai (US) social worker Sheila Barton cautions that it’s important to choose the right device and use it properly in order to avoid falls. “For example, many older adults will use a cane because it’s the least expensive mobility aid, it’s easier to transport, and they don’t want to appear too frail. However, they actually need more support than a cane can provide, and end up curtailing their physical activity because they’re afraid of falling while using their cane.”
