Spring is springing. The George Stevens Academy sports teams have commenced their spring seasons. In other vernal news, we have a story (and, yes, a photo!) of a spring peeper, one of many aptly named chorus frogs now in full song each evening. In Surry, we offer a summary of what voters can expect at their upcoming town meeting. And, as the seasonal tempo increases, you'll find many stories on area activities.

We have an extra large issue this week that captures a wide array of stories and events. Coverage includes town meetings, the solar eclipse, George Stevens Academy sports, an innovative boatyard dock replacement, a Sedgwick election, and a Maine Maritime Academy graduate who is leading the NTSB's investigation of the Baltimore bridge collapse.

With town meetings coming up in Blue Hill and Brooklin, we offer a refresher of what's on the ballot—and warrant—as well as interviews with Brooklin School Board candidates. George Stevens Academy holds its annual exhibition featuring the independent study and internship projects of junior and senior students. We have the story and photos. Our athlete spotlight profiles a local student who is a competitive fencer. And, with snow in the forecast, we have a story on the Peninsula Skating Association's season.

The lead story this week is about a George Stevens Academy graduate whose artwork has been chosen for the newly designed Maine license plate, to be issued beginning in 2025. With town meetings and local elections coming up in early April in both Blue Hill and Brooklin, we have stories detailing the candidates and warrant articles. And, with a near total solar eclipse coming to our area on Monday, April 8, we offer a special spread, with need-to-know details and fun facts. 

Brooklin is in the news this week. We have a story and map covering the town's new comprehensive plan. A new date is set for Brooklin residents to vote on the proposed school renovation plan. In Blue Hill, the select board is questioning funding for a summer camp. And, we have continuing coverage on the outside construction work at Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital.

In town coverage, we report on Brooksville's annual town meeting. Sedgwick elections leave one unfilled seat on both the three-person select board and the five-person school board. A future election will be scheduled to try to fill the vacancies. And local libraries are busy with activities, as winter makes way for spring.

The Brooklin Garden Club presents primroses to all teachers and staff at George Stevens Academy in appreciation for their dedication to students and the community. Sedgwick elects its public officials, though there is some uncertainty as to whether the write-in candidate for Selectmen will serve. And, in the aftermath of January’s storms, there is some rethinking about coastal infrastructure. We have the in-depth story. 

We have a preview of the upcoming Brooksville town meeting and a brief profile of a declared write-in candidate for the school board. There is a feature story about a sewing group coming together to make clothes for newborns. A Penobscot resident, with strong ties to Blue Hill, has been named as managing editor for the Penobscot Bay Press newspapers.

In Sedgwick news this week we have photos and a story on the Fire Department’s new rescue vehicle. The warrant portion of the annual town meeting will be delayed because finance data is not fully ready. There are no candidates on the ballot for open town offices in the election March 1. In Brooksville, the long-running dispute between the town and Buck’s Harbor Marina owner John Buck continues to work through the court system, piling up legal fees for the town. We provide the details in a catch-up story.

“The Nub” parcel of land has been given to the Town of Blue Hill. A drone image shows its proximity to the road. The “Behind the Curtain” column explains just that. An event in Brooklin featuring cold water “dippers” was the top fundraiser in the state in support of domestic violence survivors. There is a moose sighting and an extra high tide sighting. A heartfelt Another View Column expresses gratitude to the Blue Hill community. For Valentine’s Day, a profile features a Sedgwick couple in their nineties and their lifetime marriage. In Blue Hill, photos capture the energy at the Winter Fever Reliever performance and dance.


We continue our comprehensive coverage of winter sports at George Stevens Academy and the variety of events at local libraries. The Shaw Institute is doing research on the local contamination from plastics, bacteria and PFA’s.  Looking ahead there are plans for a summer camp in Blue Hill.

The SolAmerica suit against the town of Blue Hill is dismissed. Brooklin forester Si Balch talks about forestry management practices and climate change. Proposed renovations to the Brooklin School are the subject of a future town vote after the outcome of the first referendum vote was nullified by a public posting error. The venerable Jonathan Fisher House in Blue Hill requires massive restoration work. A story and pictures explain the need and show the problems. The Blue Hill select board continues to discuss the care and maintenance needs of the town floats. An Another View column warns of potential problems in pending legislation that would regulate seaweed harvesting access rights. And our sports reporter covers the activities of George Stevens Academy athletes over the winter break.

We end our publishing year with an issue that we all enjoy sharing with you. It is our annual Christmas issue, featuring drawings and writing by area school children on the theme “What Christmas and the holidays mean to me.” The drawings convey delightful perspectives and capture what this season is all about. There is a feature story on the history of Christmas carols, our annual Christmas editorial and numerous holiday greeting ads from area businesses and organizations. Just a reminder that content from this two-in-one issue will be up for two weeks, as we do not publish Christmas week. Our next issue comes out January 4. On December 18, for the third Monday in a row, our area was hit by another storm cycle. This week's was the worst yet, leaving hundreds of thousands of people across the state, including many thousands in our local coverage area, without power for extended periods as fallen trees took down power lines. Many roads were blocked and 2-plus inches of rain caused minor flooding. Southeast winds, with gusts near 70 mph, brought high waves and flying spray. We have overview coverage.

This is a week for pictures. People pictures include the winter sports teams at George Stevens Academy, Christmas tree lighting at the Blue Hill town hall, student activity at the Surry school, Santa at the Farmhouse Inn and more. We show the winter wonderland of the first snow. Our Shared Seas columnist Sarah Pebworth writes about end of year giving. The month begins with the first snowstorm of the year. Schools were closed December 4, and wet snow clung to trees, creating winter wonderland vistas captured by our photographers. This week, we share stories on various local infrastructure projects, including a power line upgrade in Sedgwick, a proposed major renovation of the Brooklin School and repair of a deteriorating roof at George Stevens Academy. Area schools' winter sports seasons have started; our coverage will begin next week. Our photographers are capturing the spirit of the season, like a recently constructed lobster buoy tree in Brooklin. And, for those of you traveling between Blue Hill and Brooklin, be aware that the Blue Hill Falls Bridge is expected to be closed from December 12 through 22.

Blue Hill’s comp plan committee holds a final public input session focused on historical and archaeological resources and land use. Brooklin’s school board makes information sessions a top priority ahead of a December vote on school renovations. And high levels of arsenic are found in Blue Hill’s groundwater. 

Blue Hill’s select board makes an offer to purchase a George Stevens Academy-owned lot. A sixth grade student at Blue Hill Consolidated School petitions the school board to allow students to play more than one sport per season. And the GSA boys’ soccer team matches up against the Mt. Abram Roadrunners at the state championship, with the title just out of reach.

Brooklin’s Friend Memorial Public Library is expanding access to books, information and services. Three area residents prepare to donate crocheted blankets to veterans at Togus Veterans Affairs Medical Center. And George Stevens Academy boys soccer is headed to the Class C North finals in Bangor after unending Bucksport in the semifinals! 

The Maine Department of Transportation terminates its contract with the contractor in charge of the South Street sidewalk project. Sen. Grohoski hosts a coffee with constituents event in Blue Hill to address citizen concerns. And students in Brooklin, Sedgwick and Deer Isle-Stonington find themselves with an unexpected long weekend as staff illnesses soar. 

Select board member Butler Smythe resigns in Blue Hill. The George Stevens Academy Board of Trustees approves the 2023-24 school budget in a special meeting. And the nearly soldout Word literary arts festival is a “blowout success!”

The Falls Bridge on Route 175 in Blue Hill will close for several weeks beginning October 30 to allow workers time to pave the new bridge and remove the temporary structure. A local contractor presents a plan to repair the George Stevens Academy cafeteria building with funds for materials provided by an anonymous donor. And a new accessible walking trail opens on Caterpillar Hill.

Roof damage at George Stevens Academy will close the east wing of its gym building after Thanksgiving break. The Island Nursing Home announces that it will not reopen due to a lack of funding and staff. And the Blue Hill Comprehensive Plan Committee will hold its final set of public input meetings in October and November. 

Blue Hill’s select board welcomes the town’s new administrator and approves a tentative go-ahead for repair work on South Street’s Bragdon Brook culvert. Brooksville Free Public Library offers expanded hours thanks to a recently awarded grant. And the Jonathan Fisher House announces an autumn celebration complete with cider, music, tours and a cooking demo. 

Family, friends and coworkers remember ‘everyday hero’ Rev. Ted Hoskins. A lobster boat is rescued by the Blue Hill Fire Department and local fishermen in East Blue Hill. And the Shaw Institute leads a beach clean-up at Carter Nature Preserve. 

The community turns out for the Jared C. Grindle softball tournament’s 20th year. The longtime residence of artist Frank Hamabe is torn down in Blue Hill. And George Stevens Academy’s Duane B. Gray golf tournament raises funds on the green.
