On 19 and 20 June the Musical Comedy Theatre is staging the premiere of Igor Konyayev’s production of Johann Strauss’s operetta “Viennese Blood”. The original libretto, in which the action was linked to the Congress of Vienna in 1814‑1815, has been revised by Semyon Altov to remove superfluous historical allusions and to tell a witty modern story of how politicians organize their private lives. The set designer is the St. Petersburg artist Olga Shaishmelashvili, who presents an elegant visual production in which the luxuriant crinolines of imperial Vienna are combined with ultramodern outfits from the world’s fashion shows and evening gowns with trainers. The operetta will be performed under the baton of the Austrian violinist and conductor Peter Guth.
