First used in Victorian times, a terrarium is a stylish way to display greenery on a shelf or tabletop. Once hooked, there is a whole world to discover, with more exotic or rare plants and unusual containers to use. Getting started couldn't be simpler - everything you need can be found at home, in a garden centre or online.

BOTTLE BASICS

Clear a space on the kitchen table and gather your materials. You need:

* A glass container, such as a pickle jar. Bigger is better - around 30cm wide and tall. It needs a tight lid to create the warm, humid atmosphere that tropical plants love.
