BURNING RANGERS

THE GAME

The Burning Rangers are a team of futuristic spacefaring rescue operatives, and you're the new recruit. Taking control of Shou Amabane or Tillis, you've got to fight fires and rescue stranded victims in settings such as a power plant and a space station, moving quickly to prevent the disasters from escalating. No matter which character you pick, you'll have a jetpack to help you dodge unexpected explosions and reach high places, giving a platforming dimension to gameplay. Though the game does have boss battles and occasionally other enemies, fire is the key hazard you'll face. You can charge up your extinguishing laser for powerful shots, but it's better to use basic shots if you can, as putting out fires this way generates crystals. As with Sonic's rings, one is enough to protect you from fatal damage, but you'll need five to transport a victim to safety. With ten, you'll earn an extra continue. Each of the game's four stages has a huge number of layout configurations, delivering fresh routes during each replay.

Sonic Team sought to stretch the Saturn's limits with Burning Rangers, and the game incorporates graphical features like a lighting system and transparency effects thought to be impossible on the console. The game also includes plenty of voice acting, with your colleagues checking in via radio to update you on the situation and help you to navigate each area – vital, since you don't have a map.
