Killer serving life term dies a day after his 33rd birthday

A MURDERER who stabbed a man to death in broad daylight has died in prison.

Jake Whelan was one of three men who knifed the unarmed Lynford Brewster on a Cardiff housing estate and left the 29-year-old to die in a pool of blood.

Whelan, who was handed a life sentence in 2019, died on July 14 this year - the day after his 33rd birthday - at HMP Gartree, a high-security prison in Leicestershire. The prisons ombudsman is investigating his death.

The killing of Mr Brewster, an expectant father, took place on June 12, 2016, at the Brynfedw estate in Llanedeyrn. A trial at Bristol Crown Court heard the victim had told his partner he was “popping out” to collect money he was owed.
