Inflation-busting pay awards lack support

TEACHING unions in Wales have expressed anger at the Welsh Government offering a 4% pay award rather than the 4.8% recommended by the Independent Welsh Pay Review Body (IWPRB).

But at a time when most people are feeling the squeeze of rising bills and no real wage increases there may be scant support for public sector inflation-busting pay awards.

‘This is more significant than the .8%. The IWPRB was established in March 2019 as an independent body to make recommendations to the Welsh Government on pay and conditions of school teachers and leaders after responsibility for that transferred to Welsh ministers in 2018.

‘This is the first time Cardiff Bay has gone below the IWPRB recommendation on setting teachers’ pay.
