Picture captures autumn mood

ATMOSPHERIC WATERCOLOUR SHOWS POLPERRO HARBOUR, SAYS JO CLARKE

THE weather seems to have really changed over the last couple of weeks, and it feels like autumn is in the air.

This watercolour is called 'Autumn evening, Polperro harbour.' It came into the art collection at The Box in 1948 - most likely purchased directly from the artist, Frederick T.W. Cook (1907-1982).

Cook was born in London but, from an early age, spent his holidays painting in the Westcountry. He studied at Hampstead School of Art and then served as a fireman-artist during the Second World War.

In 1947 he moved to Polperro with his wife, and they remained there for the rest of their lives. Their home was called 'Harbour Studio' and was located right on the water's edge.
