Inspectorate overrules flats refusal for city pub

A PLYMOUTH pub that served generations in the city since the 1800s is set to become flats. The "vital" community pub was the only meeting place in St Judes and was a "second home" to some residents - and many in the neighbourhood are "devastated" that it will now become three one-bedroom flats.
Locals have been campaigning to get The Grenville pub reopened since April 2024 - and they had the support of local councillors. But, the building's owner Andrew Cotterell has been fighting equally hard to turn The Grenville into flats.
Despite Plymouth City Council refusing the planning application for the change of use, Mr Cotterell appealed the decision via the Planning Inspectorate.
Now, an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State, has revealed that "the appeal is allowed and planning permission is granted for change of use from public house (Sui Generis) to residential apartments".
St Judes resident Dr Dave Jones said: "Had it stayed local I think we would have been ok. The three local councillors deserve a vote of thanks for all their help in this, particularly Sue Dann. And obviously Bea Bel-grave-Jones who really as worked tirelessly to try to save the pub. We are all gutted and upset that the Planning Inspectorate approved the application."
