C103 IS BEING TRANSFORMED INTO BUSINESSES AND HOMES

- By WILLIAM TELFORD

Exciting new future for former nightclub

A FORMER Plymouth nightclub has ditched after-dark fun for gourmet fungi as the C103 building is transformed into business space.

Whether people remember the Union Street nightspot as C103 or JFK's, or the Beer Keller, or Avis, Tiff's or The Street, it is undergoing a rebirth which will see it house enterprises including an indoor farm, which is already producing tasty mushrooms for the city's top restaurants.

The building was bought by regeneration specialist Nudge Community Builders in 2022 after laying derelict for years and being frequented by drug users and pigeons. It was damaged by fire in October 2023 but now Nudge is well underway with a revamp that will see more than £375,000 spent to repurpose it.

The ex-dancehall was a mundane grey, but in 2023 Nudge painted it green, red, pink and blue. Each of the original four buildings, that had been combined into one unit, was given a different colour and the windows covered in snaps of Stonehouse residents.

The paint job coincided with a strip out of all asbestos inside and a specialist team removed masses of pigeon droppings which had built up over years inside. Nudge wants to turn it into two buildings, with one side housing businesses and community organisations that will create jobs, and the other becoming homes for young people.
