Call for MP to quit as city councillor

THERE are calls for Plymouth MP Rebecca Smith to stand down as a city councillor so a by-election can be held.

The city’s Reform UK group has called for the Tory to quit her Plymstock Radford seat this year and said a by-election could be held simultaneously with the referendum for an elected mayor on July 17.

Ms Smith won the South West Devon seat at last year’s general election. But she remained as a city councillor and today told Plymouth-Live she had always intended to see out her entire term, ending at the next local authority elections in May 2026 and give her council allowance to community groups.
